Woolworths launches grunge range (not really)

Holla! How was everyone's weekend? (Feel free to talk to your computer screen now.) Mine was good but hot. Flip, was it hot. I've always been in the minority of Durbanites who can't handle the heat. Happy to swop some sun for snow with someone! Anyway, it's raining now thank goodness. I was about to say the highlight of my weekend was watching Zombieland but then I remembered, the highlight was seeing Nadia get married! Her wedding was beaauuuuutiful. I took a gazillion pics but I'll let her tell you about it first. Anyway, this is just a random (and heavily cropped) outift post meets Zombieland appreciation fest. My grungy get up (well the ring, headband and blanket top) is from Woolworths of all places. And that's really all I have to say! Don't you hate it when you don't know how to end a blog post? This one's just sort of fizzling out.....getting kinda akward.....gah!

Will blog for mojitos apparently!

Bacardi recently got in touch with me and asked if I'd like to host a Bacardi Maestro bash for ten gal pals. Now, I gotta be honest. I'm not wild about the idea of companies plying me with booze so that I'll blog about them. But clearly, not uncomfortable enough to decline! So yeah, I'm sorry guys. I sold out in the name of 'friends,' 'pizza' and 'free drinks.' But heck it was fun! A bunch of us girls got together at Unit 11 where Kevin, the Bacardi Brand Ambassador (nice title, dude!) proceeded to give us a crash course in cocktail making. We all had a bash at erm, bashing ice, 'waking up mint,' and chucking lemons about. In all honesty, I'd never had a Bacardi anything in my life before but it went down a treat. Who knew, something as simple as Bacardi, Coke and a good wedge of lemon could taste so good. Apparently it's one of the most popular bar calls in the world. Oh my, sounds like I'm really plugging it now! Anyway, we all had an excellent time and polished the evening off with ten pizzas from Luna Blu - they were nomtastic! Cheers to Kevin for educating us in the ways of white rum and to Unit 11 for letting us girls loose behind the bar! And just for the record, we were all driven safely home and there were no stonking hangovers to be had! Here's a peek at our razzling.

No pics of me this time - I was busy juggling pizza, a camera and about 3 glasses of Bacardi simultaneously! PS: My mom was so touched by all your sweet birthday messages yesterday. She is a very happy Mama Gloss - haha!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Kit Cat! Hope you have a scrummy day and many more. Thanks for being the bestest mom in the whole world. (Oh hai guys! Here are some pics of Mama Mia and I in London in 2008. I must remember to blog some stories from that holiday - it was a ballet of emotions indeed!)

Puppeh Love

This is the little bundle of fluff that follows my mom around all day. Mary is a rare breed that's part dog, part rabbit and part lamb. Or at least barks like a dog, sits like a rabbit and walks like a lamb.

Hope you're having a nice day wherever you may be!

A Lauren never changes her spots

Except to wear stripes. Or denim. Or other clothing in general. Sorry, I thought that title was a winner until I realised it was both, misleading and ridiculous. This is the other dress I bought from JayJays. I'd tried it on a few times before but something stopped me from buying it. Then I saw Anthea wearing it and decided 'It must be mine as well.' As you can see, I accessorised it with a rather questionable combo of red lippy and leopard print. One walks a fine line between Rockabilly and Trashilicious when pairing these two together. I'm not sure which side I'm leaning to here but let's hope the Bambi necklace keeps me safely on the side of Rockadisney rather than Trashtastic!

Man, I am short. That pic of me kicking my leg up is hilar! Now for a sob story. My sunnies snapped in my hands after the last pic. I loved them because they were from the cutest vintage store in Cape Town and they went with everything. Fingers crossed I can fix em with the powers of Superglue!

Interpret Durban was...um, awesome

Guys, is it the height of cheese to leave an event, go straight home and blog about it? Probably! Well, I've had two polystyrene cups of wine so who knows where this blog post will take us. Tonight was the first annual Interpret Durban party. (If you're a newcomer, hello and welcome! Durban is my hometown on the east coast of South Africa.) Now, Durbs gets a bad rap for being, well, a bit boring. Us Durbanites tend to moan that nothing ever happens here. Well, that all changed this year! Or, at least it's felt like it has. Alot of cool places have opened up and things are crackalacking. Yeah, I still use that word. Durbs has always been a creative city that's flown under the radar but it's getting pretty noisy now! Much of that is thanks to two of the nicest people you'll ever meet, Casey and Richard. These guys recently started an alternative Durban tours company called Street Scene which has been a hit of note! They wanted to print some tees for the business but instead of going for your standard golfer, they asked the whole city to submit their ideas! Loads of Durbanites created tee designs that reflect their interpretations of Durban and everyone got together tonight to party and choose some winning designs for Street Scene. I went along (Han Solo as Craig was working) and met many of you whom I know via the Twitterverse and blogs - it was awesome! Ah man, Case and Rich did such a super job putting the show together. On sale were the best Bunny Chows* and Rottis in town (real traditional Durban grub), a killer band played, there were sneaker Sketch Wars and all the proceeds are going to a local underprivileged football team. Well done Case and Rich, you guys made us proud. Here's how the night looked through my lens.

A very important edit! I received this comment from Wayne: "Just a quick point of correction, cause I know Judd would crawl up into his little fun bus and have a big old cry if he heard that people thought the cups were polystyrene. They are in fact a bio cup. They are made of corn starch and a special vine. They will turn into a worms delight in the next 72 days." Lols!! Thanks for that Wayne, much appreciated. "A worm's delight" - you slay me.

If I snapped a pic of you and it's not here - don't worry. It wasn't you, it was me. Two wines and dimly lit coffee roasteries don't make for the sharpest of snaps. *No bunnies are harmed during the making of a bunny chow. It is a 1/4 loaf of bread, scooped out and filled with curry - nomtastic!

Llymlrs Loves

Lily Melrose. What an awesome name. For some strange reason it reminds me of three of my favourite things - Melrose Place, Melrose Cheese and lilies.  I recently discovered her blog via Jen's and it's safe to say I'm a stalker big fan. She's got the British student-meets Olsen Twin vibe nailed to perfection. Fellow fans will know that her blog's name is 'Lily Melrose' (again, awesome) spelt without the vowels. I personally refer to it as 'Lymmers' to anyone that will listen. Last week I asked her what her current 'loves' are and this is what she replied. Thank you Miss Melrose.

GHD Midnight Collection launch at Gateway

I know, this post looks daunting, right? I wish I could say there's a free GHD at the end for you but there's not. Only a nonsensical account of my Monday night out.

I'm typing this between dipping into a bag of raw almonds - horrible things!  I know they're healthy but they are distinctly lacking in two things - a good roasting and a good salting. Nuts aside (!), I attended a GHD demo at Gateway tonight with my bud, Taneal. We teetered into the Max store and the hostess behind the Macbook asked what salon we were from! Ha! I was like, 'Erm, no, I'm a blogger, I think I'm here under Glossary.' Well, literally everyone there was a hairdresser/stylist. All I could think was, thank God I'd been to the hairdresser on Saturday. Taneal was wailing, 'My roots, my roots!' Clearly I had missed the memo because everyone was dressed in black and I looked like an elf from the Christmas display outside. Seriously, it looked like Mugato's funeral in there. We took our seats on the red couch (so I could blend into the furniture) and scanned the room for goodie bags. We're classy like that. Failing spotting any, we noshed a few snacks and drank in the sweet smell of hairspray and freshly blow-waved coifs. GHD were there to demo the new Midnight Collection range to Durban's hair stylists. When Terry Scott took to the stage, people went crazy! He's like Mick Jagger to hairdressers! During his demo, he spoke of how he'd just been to London and that 'dressing hair' was back in fashion. I was rather for this as I think us Saffers tend to play it pretty safe with our cuts and colours. Nothing wrong with that but a few more mad 'do's on the street wouldn't hurt I suppose. After the models had their locks styled on stage, they sashayed down the runway in Max clothing but bless, the poor finale model. She was meant to rip off her train and whip a comb out her hair in all manner of drama but she couldn't get the train off and had to ruck the comb out of her hair! (Which she flung off the stage!) Oh man, I really felt for her. It reminded of Carrie's tumble in SATC. Meanwhile, Taneal and I, (showing our true class yet again) did not have any cash to hand. We were parched as heck but all we could afford to scrape together was some change for one Coke! We deliberated buying this measly drink for fifteen minutes and eventually Taneal decided to brave the bar. Suddenly, she returns with a bottled Cane and Sparberry for me! Turns out, all the drinks were free! Wow, did I just type Cane and Sparberry? That sounds like a drink for juvenile delinquents. I should probably say something about hair straighteners now. Well, I'm not a label queen but if there is one brand I would recommend for hair straightening, it's GHD. They're the gentlest on your hair and they work fast. Moms everywhere trust GHD. Sorry, for a moment, I thought I was writing a Panado ad. In all seriousness, GHD straighteners are the best in my humble two cents. I have mad, maaaaad, kinky, thick hair and without my GHD, I would look like 'the wild woman of Borneo' as my gran would say. Now I best hit the hay and pray that the word 'kinky' (now used twice) does not attract too many weird google searches. Happy hair 'dressing' all!

Can you guess which gal is Taneal? Haha!
